Circus Street

Circus Street is a provider of online learning for enterprise clients. The learning takes the form of video lessons, which can be accessed through a website or mobile app. My role is User Experience Designer, working as part of the R&D team to research and design new features and improvements for the product.

I’ve chosen to highlight 4 areas of work:

  • User feedback database

  • Redesigned mobile app

  • Interface and experience improvements to the product and internal tools

  • Internal resources for diversity and inclusion education and awareness

Feedback database

I believe one of my most valuable contributions to this role has been the creation and ongoing maintenance of a user feedback database. When I arrived, user feedback could be found spread sparsely across many different files, in many different places and each one with limited access. This made it very difficult to get any reliable overview of what users had to say about the product, and even harder to draw any insights that could inform the work we do.

I gathered all the feedback from across the business and created a central database where each piece of feedback could be tagged with metadata such as where it came from, when it was sent, what it was about etc. This has since grown to house over 20,000 pieces of feedback, with thousands more being added each month. The database is accessible to everyone across the business and is easily searchable, which I believe is important.

Mobile app redesign

One of the longest running projects I’ve been involved in is the the redesign of the Circus Street mobile app. My work on this has included early user interviews to really understand how and why the current app is being used, and to identify areas where improvement would benefit users most. This then progressed to creating, testing and iterating on wireframe prototypes to ensure clear and easy user journeys. The process and changes were frequently communicated to internal stakeholders, and the designs and journeys were frequently tested with real learners. More recently, I have been in close contact with the developers that are implementing the new designs to make sure they have all the information and assets they need, as well as advising on changes to the designs made necessary because of technical difficulties.

Platform improvements

The smaller projects I’ve worked on have been experience improvements, both for internal users and our learners. This has included researching and designing improvements to our end of lesson feedback journey, proposing designs for translated assessments, and designing UX tweaks to our internal Admin backend.

D&I resources

At Circus Street I am a founding member of the D&I Committee. Whilst not part of my day to day role, I do apply many of the principles from my work as a UX Designer to the committee, such as prioritising visual clarity, legibility and ease of use when producing educational resources. I also believe providing information in an interactive format can help make it more memorable and engaging.
